Ingredients

  • 3 c apples (or pears, peaches, sliced, peeled, and cored; or berries)
  • 1 T lemon juice
  • 80 g oats (1 cup)
  • 45 g Flour (Wholemeal) (1/3 cup)
  • 110 g Sugar (Brown) (1/2 cup)
  • 1/2 t ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 t ground cloves
  • 76 g butter (softened, 1/3 c)

Method

Get out a deep pie dish and oil it well. Place the prepared apples or peaches into the dish and sprinkle the lemon juice over them. Set them aside. In a medium sized bowl, combine the oatmeal, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and cloves. Add the butter. If the butter is soft, it will be an easy matter to mix it in with a fork. If the butter is hard, you can melt it in the microwave or in a small pan on the stove. The topping will be a little less crumbly, but still very good.

After the oatmeal mixture is well mixed and crumbly, scatter it over the apples in the casserole. It will cover them thickly. Now put the casserole in the oven and bake it at 350F for about 40 minutes. Remove from the oven and serve hot with whipped cream or Whipped Topping.

Notes

This is really good made with peaches or pears too. Choose which ever fruit is most abundant. Peaches in the summertime, apples and pears in the fall and winter.

SJ Note 20 Oct 2009: We had this last night with apple and some raspberries we had left from something else, and it was really good (as usual!), and made plenty of topping to cover the berries.  Probably any fruit would work.
