Ingredients

  • 3 c milk
  • 3 eggs (large)
  • 3/4 c Sugar (Granulated)
  • 1/3 c Flour (Plain)
  • 2 T butter
  • 2 t vanilla extract

Method

Whisk together first four ingredients in a large saucepan over medium-low heat.  Cook, whisking constantly, 15-20 minutes or until thickened.  Remove from heat; stir in butter and vanilla until butter is melted.

Fill a large bowl with ice.  Place saucepan in ice, and let stand, stirring occasionally, 30 minutes or until mixture is thoroughly chilled.

Cover and chill 2 to 24 hours. 

Notes

The step of putting the pudding on ice is probably unnecessary; I extracted this from a recipe for Nutter Butter Banana Pudding Trifle, and I think that step had more to do with the trifle than with the pudding.  I should try it both ways to see.
